Susan posted about seeing a film called 'The Group'. I have not seen the
film, but guess that it is based on the novel of the same name, by Mary
McCarthy, pub 1963.
This is one of the classic American novels, here is the Amazon Uk synopsis:
Synopsis
Eight young women from the class of 1933 have graduated from Vassar and are
beginning to learn about life. They choose or are offered marriage, a career
or an emancipated life, one of sexual or social freedom. In their
discoveries and development they mirror the growing up of provincial
America.
The chapter in which Pru has her baby and her early feeding experience is
really well written and instructive. Highly recommended for those
interested in the sad history of infant feeding in the west.
Disclaimer: I know that I was first prompted to reread this novel as a
breastfeeding supporter after reading extracts in a file of Jack Newman's.
I do not know if his files of breastfeeding quotes from literature are still
somewhere on the internet.
