There was a study done in the UK that found that palpation (feeling with
a finger in the mouth) was frequently insufficient to identify cleft
palate, even obvious clefts of the hard palate. The authors recommended
that the baby's palate be visualized with a light during the normal
newborn exam, which can take place well AFTER the first breastfeeding.
