Dear Friends:

Jennifer makes an excellent point that licensure has been used to control
midwifery and has worked against midwives in the US. There is a book published
that develops this very same notion: Making Midwives Legal: Childbirth,
Medicine and the Law.

My thoughts on this issue are complex. Licensure has helped physicians, PTs,
massage therapists and other professions. It has been a detriment to
midwifery practice in the US. So what to do about LCs?

On one hand, being a LC is so complex. What other profession besides the
counseling ones, deals with 2 individuals plus a process? On the other hand,
licensure hasn't helped midwives.

warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI
craniosacral therapy practitioner
