Hello Dr. Hale,

My name is Molly, I live in Roseville, CA. My lactation consultant asked me to
contact

you, because I have been taking Zoloft for postpartum depression, and since
taking the

medication, my son who is 2 months old has started crying for hours on end,
sometimes

consolable, sometimes not. I began taking it on 9/7/2007, and by 9/9/2007
he would just

cry for no explainable reason, and he did this for like 3 days, I quit taking the
medication on

9/11/2007 and by 9/13/2007 things were back to normal. My lactation
consultant advised

me to start taking the Zoloft again as he may have been just colicky, so I
did. This time I

took it in the evening thinking that he does not nurse as much at night, and I
started

taking the Zoloft again, on 9/14/2007 and by 9/16/2007 he began waking up
in the

morning crying, once again. Sometimes consolable, sometimes not. I have
since quit

taking the medication again, and things are returning back to normal, today is
the first

day he has not woken up crying.

The main reason I am contacting you is because my lactation consultant says
your'e the best

and I am wondering if there are any other antidepressant medications I can
take that

will hopefully not affect my son? If you have any suggestions, please e-mail
me back as

your advise will be very much appreciated, and I will pass this information onto
my

Dr.

Thank-You so much for your time.

Molly
Molly:

This is interesting, as I've never heard of these symptoms, particularly in an
infant.

I think the only other option is to try bupropion.but only if you or your infant
do not have a history of seizure disorders.

Bupropion is very commonly used today and is popular with some patients.

Talk with your physician.

Tom Hale Ph.d.
