I think you are right, he is going too long between feeds, or more to the
point, he is not feeding very often. I think he is also taking in small
quantities at each feed, so his total is not enough to get him gaining. Some
babies just stay kind of laid back and sleepy if they don't get enough milk
for energy.
What I would suggest, is to see if you can get a #5 French infant feeding
tube, or periodontal syringe, and finger feed your baby. Of course, this
will also involve expressing milk for the feeds. Based on the birthweight,
and an estimation of what he might be taking from the breast (1/2 oz??) I
would try to give 1 oz of ebm 9 or 10 times per 24 hrs in addition to his
breastfeeding. I do suggest waking him up for these feeds until he's more
able to wake on his own.
I would feel better if he does get weighed maybe twice a week for now.
I think you will see a pretty quick turnaround in his activity and interest
in feedings using these suggestions.
