The fact that some people take the "6 months" so literally-either holding off until then no matter what signs baby is giving or trying to start the day the baby turns 6 mo regardless of baby's signs-led to changing the term to "around the middle of the first year after birth".
I knew one LLL Leader many years ago who had a baby after several that she nursed without any problems. This baby just would not gain no matter how much she nursed. There was definitely not a suply problem. After trying everything any of us could think of, she consulted with one of LLL's original medical advisors and he sugested starting banana. I think the baby was around 6-12 weeks of age. She began giving just a few baby spoonfuls each day and the baby started gaining beautifully. As I recall, there were never any other problems with this child.
