I know we are not supposed to contradict docs and other so-called "medically
qualified" practitioners, but when I get cases like this I tactfully suggest
that she gets a second opinion from another Ped. I also am shocked by what
is happening to this baby`s gut as well as thinking about how obese he will
be by one year old.

Of course it is exhausting when a baby does not take a reasonable break
between at least one or two feeds in the 24 hours, but again I ask mums to
give me a record of the feeds. When they say: he feeds every hour or two
and I never get a rest, sometimes she is referring to daylight hours and
when I ask her for the 24-hour record the little angel is actually sleeping
several hours during the night so it is obvious that he needs to make up for
this during the day.

Lactnetters who shared our rejoicing for our new grandson in July might like
to know that Michael a.k.a. Noki Matoki which is short for sweet baby in
Hebrew - born 3.2 k. is now 7.5 k. at nearly 4 months - you should see his
little "poulkas" - thighs and legs if you need a translation!
I take my hat off to my daughter-in-law because in spite of pressure to
finish University papers one month after his birth, she has incredible
patience and inner calm. It is not only that he feeds very frequently but
he doesn`t like to be out of the "milk zone". So even if she occasionally
leaves us a bottle of expressed milk just to go for a couple of hours to the
library he is very anxious for her to come back, he gulps down that bottle,
opens his eyes and looks around for his mom. A walk in the pram or talking
to the cats in the garden aren`t enough to distract him and we spend the two
hours going through the Incy Wincy Spider and This Little Piggy Went to
Market routine until he is rolling over with laughter - but then he realises
that he is far from the "milk zone", the chuckling becomes a wail, and we
all welcome his mum when she walks in the door. However, he does sleep from
middle evening for about five hours so although that is not the usual time
that the parents want to go catch up on their own sleep, their bedtime is
getting earlier and earlier. So much for routines!

Ok-here is a good one for you...I almost fell out of my chair when I spoke
to this client today.

Baby is 4 months old next week. Peds advised mom to put cereal in baby's
bottle at 7 weeks of age but didn't specify to mom how much. She is now
putting 4 scoops (formula can scoop) of cereal into a 4 oz bottle of formula
3 times a day. Baby is also taking 4 to 6 - 4oz bottles of formula in a 24
hour period. Mom just started giving baby one 21/2 oz jar of food at night
then follows up with the cereal bottle.

I am in shock here ladies! This mom was an exclusive breastfeeder that just
miraculously dried up from one day to the next...and now this is happening!

I did manage to get my jaw up off the floor long enough to tell this mom
that I would not go against what the doctor said. I do not agree with what
she is doing to this baby's guts! Holy Cow! She said that the peds advised
her to do this so baby would stop eating as often. She was wanting to eat
every 11/2 to 2 hrs-I told her that was not out of the ordinary for an
exclusive BFer. She also managed to tell me that the baby will stop when
she is full!

Mom said that she thinks she'll back off to two scoops in the bottle b/c of
my reaction. I told her I would "talk" with my ladies and get their
opinion. Again, restating that I would not go against the Docs
instructions.

I'm ready, let me have it! Have a blessed day,Merideth M. Buell, BFPCDSHS
