One pattern I see is that women are surprised that there are any challenges at all with breastfeeding. They often got the message that the "milk comes in" on the 3rd day and then all is smooth sailing. If any combination of challenges occur they think something is wrong with them. Husbands have the idea that you put a baby in it's mothers arms and everything just comes naturally. Yes, the baby knows how to suck but positioning, etc. is a learned art, like making love or many things in life.
also, there is information overload out there about babies and breastfeeding, but they usually don't realize they are going to be nursing their babies at least every 3 hours, for instance. This means they have to organize their time in order to care for themselves, and grandma can't feed the baby. So they throw their arms up and when the doc hears their frustration he grabs his chance to please the patient and have more control liability-wise and rescues them with uninformed but old stand-by advice. I hope they are having to learn more in med school these days about breastfeeding. And yet, they don't protest bitterly when we hear about formula recalls, and reactions and allergies to formula and necrotizing enteritis in premies, etc. Vicky York, IBCLC, CPD
