Thank you, Judy Ritchie, for telling us about the photo show in Washington
State.

I encourage Lactnetters to read the article. Click where it invites you, to
see a second photo that will really get people talking! You can also post a
comment. Here's what I sent:

As the mother of two breastfed children-all grown up now-I am happy to read
about Rachel Valley's photo exhibit and the community panel discussion that
will accompany it. Breastfeeding my first child in 1968 brought me
unexpected feelings of power and joy as I learned what it means to be a
mother mammal. But in 1968 there was almost no place where I could express
what I was feeling without offending someone. Our culture acknowledges
countless aspects of sexual love but gives us little guidance about maternal
love, with its physical grounding in the hormones of pregnancy, birth, and
lactation. An art show is the perfect venue to help people explore their
thoughts and feelings about the things that "polite society" teaches us must
stay hidden.
