Hi All,

I went to a business meeting this morning with a new company that does 3-D
and 4-D imaging. They offer childbirth classes, baby signs, prenatal
massage etc. I thought I might be interested in sort of joining forces with
them since their clients are my target audience and work together to promote
breastfeeding. One of the owners has 5 mo old twins she is currently
pumping and bottlefeeding EBM for. While there taking a tour I saw that
they had an AMB gift bag so I asked and discovered to my frustration that
they give these things out along with a breastfeeding bags that still have
an ABM travel bag.

We talked about the ethics and the fact that they are promoting this
particular company - doing their marketing for free. She supplements her
babies but not with this particular brand - so I asked her why not.she had
no answer but it got her thinking. We discussed the concept of choice to
which I said if she wants to give choice she should provide samples of ALL
available ABM to the parents. We talked about promoting healthy behaviors
(breastfeeding) and also about what the baby would choose if s/he could.

I need to pull up a list or compilation of pros and cons for both BF and ABM
and will be sending her the list of ABM recalls. I'll be sending her links
like crazy - she is open to education.

Before anyone gets on me about the ultrasound issue I am already thinking
about that. I know there are risks - I asked her if there were - she said
NONE. She is an L&D nurse.

My question is: is it professionally unethical for me to tie my name to a
company that promotes the use of ABM by violating the WHO Code (now
knowingly) by giving out gift bags? My gut says that tho they could be a
great source of work for me maybe I shouldn't tie my name to them in any way
other than providing my brochures to put out on their table. They are
having a grand opening in a few weeks and the ABM company has donated a door
prize they plan on giving away.

Thoughts?

Wondering - where do my professional ethics and need to feed my family fit
in together??
