There was resistance from some of the Peds when the hospital where I worked
made babies in mom's room the "default setting". There were several
portable trays (like the ones many gardeners use) with the equipment that
would be used for normal exams. The docs would take one of these with them
when they went from room to room. A few were already doing exams in the
room before the change, but most eventually realized that it did save them
time. Instead of first checking the babies and then making rounds to talk
with the moms, they could accomplish both at the same time. Teaching the
parents and pointing out things about their babies during the exam soon
became popular (duh!). One doc, however, never took to it at least during
the time I was there. His complaint? "They might ask me questions?"!!!
(Needless to say, he was not one of the more popular docs.)
The only time a normal, healthy baby has to go back to a central nursery
should be for a circumcision (if one is being done) and for pictures (most
cameras are electronically connected to the photo company and can't be
moved). In both cases, a parent can accompany the baby. Daily weights can
be done with the same portable scales that are taken from room to room for
the initial weight after birth. Any hospital doing differently (IMO) is
still operating in the laxt century!
