So.here is a "poser" for you. Exclusive breastfeeding is the gold standard,
but for a variety of reasons, not all mothers will meet that standard. Should
we refrain from teaching them about the safest possible alternatives to
exclusive breastfeeding? or should we leave women to learn from their
peers and their parents, from trial-and-error with commercial products, and
from marketing materials produced by non-Code-compliant companies?

Of course I may be wrong in my perspective, but since most of the moms who
live where I live go back to work "early and often", paced, breath- and
baby-respecting, bottlefeeding is a way that moms can hope to continue their
breastfeeding relationships, and their milk supplies, despite long separations,
which can be up to 10 hours with commuting. We use the phrase "when
breastfeeding babies take bottles" to keep the focus on the fact that these are
breastfeeding babies who at times are in positions where their moms need them to eat
somehow, safely, when they are not available. LLL meetings in the neighborhood
are well aware that moms will usually do some bottlefeeding, despite
discussing all the alternatives there are for some women, and we want them to be
educated about how to do this safely, respectfully, and in a way least likely to
undermine continued breastfeeding. It is about helping babies continue to
breastfeed longer.
Peace,
