Dear Friends:
Something happened today at the first session of an 18-hour course I am
teaching. A nurse spontaneously shared with the class about her experiences with
s2s.
I wish I could have recorded what she said today, and played it for other
nurses that I teach. She started out by talking honestly of how she had hated
breastfeeding because it was so much work and she already had so much to do in
that hour or two after delivery, all sorts of paperwork and assessments and
giving Vitamin K and a host of myriad nursing tasks. She used to think "well,
if bf works, it works, and if not, oh well."
Then she went on to talk about skin to skin, and described a case where she
worked 20 minutes to get a baby to latch. Both she and the mother and baby
were frustrated; this nurse decided to put the baby s2s and wrapped a blanket
around the dyad while she completed some of her other nursing tasks. Lo and
behold, after a few minutes, the mother reported that the baby was nursing!
That sold Kelli and now she uses s2s and loves it because it relieves her of a
lot of work.
The room of 18 other nurses listened intently, and I could see how well her
message went in. Bless that wonderful nurse for speaking so beautifully, so
simply and eloquently.
Skin to skin saves nurses work!! That is the slogan for our times!
If more nurses and other hospital staff use s2s, they will be convinced as
well. And breastfeeding rates will increase, because the baby gets to do what
it wants!!
warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI
