I'm sure it would help some dads to know about some of the things other
dads have done to help breastfeeding succeed in their families. As an
example, my husband helped us in a way I've never read about in any
books or anything. My son was tiny when he was born, and it took us a
while longer than some to get breastfeeding started well. My son would
get very upset sometimes when we tried and it wasn't working. Then he
would have more trouble because he was upset, and being in my arms made
him think of nursing, so he couldn't calm down. My husband would then
hold the baby to calm him down a little. They usually 'went for a
walk', which meant that they left the bedroom, walked down the hall to
the dining room, around the dining room table, and then came back. When
they got back, the baby was calm and ready to nurse.
Also, at first my son slept in his own bed in our room. My husband was
the one who would go pick the baby up, change his diaper, and bring him
to me to nurse.
At one point we had to use an eye-dropper for a day to get milk into my
son, and my husband was the one who had the dropper and used it to drip
milk into my son's mouth as he was latched on and trying to nurse. We
only had to do this for one day, and then he had the strength to be able
to nurse.
