This is a post from a mother, with a breastfeeding toddler, stuck in the
San Diego evacuation.
I imagine that those who can inpact on this, will wish to do so. I, for
one, am outraged:
"*The wildfires here are ridiculous, and fortunately we live in the
center of the city so most of our concern is air quality, not actual
fire. I did have a *small* fit, though, when the representative for the
March of Dimes (of all groups) came on and said that even breastfeeding
moms needed to take ready-to-serve formula to the shelter for their
babies in an evacuation. Grrr."
I have no idea who "March of the Dimes" are, but I take great exception
to them going round handing our formula to the breastfeeding mothers in
an emergency, and telling them that THEY HAD TO TAKE IT. Like we really
need confidence in breastfeeding to take that much of a hit. Even in
the forum this was posted in, comments about "Well, mothers' milk dries
up in stress" have been stated. I'm presuming this was some sort of
Public Service Broadcast, and the mother concerned has already done a
vigourous defence of the idea that her milk will 'dry up' under stress,
and the shelters are well equipped if needs be.
Because as we know, in human emergencies, mothers' milk fails! *bang*
*bang* *bang*
(Hoping all LactNetters in San Diego area are safe..)
