There are good reasons to store these fluids separately. I would be most
worried that it is too easy for an overworked nurse or an overwhelmed mother
to pick up the wronge container. If you must use one fridge I suggest you
use different coloured containers for the formula and/or place bright red
warning labels on the formula (preferrably obscuring the brand logo) ,
WARNING: ARTIFICIAL INFANT MILK SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN TO INFANTS WITHOUT
WRITTEN CONSENT FROM PARENTS. The consent form should clearly state the
known risks of infection and increased stay in hospital. I would also be
worried that storing them in the sam containers in the same fridge because
doing so suggests that the two are equivalent. I would put the same warning
on the fridge that contained the formula.

Subject: hospital storage for breastmilk and formula

I have searched for documentation regarding freezer/refrigerater storage of
breastmilk and formula, and have been unsuccessful.
As far as storing both human milk and formula TOGETHER, ADA says it's OK
(best practice is to have separate units for human milk). Do any of you
have references for storing EBM and formula in the same refrigerator? Is
there any reason these can't be stored in the same unit? Human Milk Banking
Association recommends a separate unit in order to protect the breastmilk
and give mothers the clear message that it is valued.
Thanks,
