My daughter took her baby to the Ped today for his 4 month checkup. This is her second and she is doing a wonderful job, nursing exclusively.
The baby is?just over double his?birth weight, in the 95th percentile for height and weight. The ped asked her what he is eating and she told him breastmilk. He paused while charting and asked what else. She said nothing else, just breastmilk. The ped then told her that she can certainly be feeding the baby food now. Stacy asked him if there was a nutritional concern and?told him that she prefers to follow the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics that?recommends 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding. That threw him, and after reflecting on that for a moment, he told her that he found that babies digestive enzymes are mature enough for solid foods by 4 months. She then told him she would be interested in reading more of that body of research if he could provide the references. He then left the room. The nurse came into the room at that point ( probably was told be the Ped to go in and finish the interview!). She asked Stacy if the baby is sleeping through the night. Stacy said that she would have to consider what they mean by sleeping through the night since they do not fully awaken to breastfeed. The nurse didn't answer and also left the room. Stacy said she guess that means everything is ok-when they stop asking you stupid questions.
