Hi jaye
Hi Jaye
What good instincts you have. Would it be unethical for you to tie your name
to a company that actively promotes artificial feeding products? It sounds
to me like you already know the answer - and are already working towards the
solution. If you allow your name to be affiliated with theirs you give your
implicit imprimatur to the products they are promoting. I suggest that you
send your friend a copy of the latest WHO review on the long term effects of
breastfeeding (email me off list if you can't find it) and the TUFTS
university ARHQ review. There are lists of 'benefits' of breastfeeding/
artificial feeding but in my opinion these simply cloud the issue and
reinforce the notion that infant feeding is a lifestyle choice - like brand
of pram, cot or linen. Perhaps you could, having educated the owner talk to
her about becoming a Baby Friendly (code compliant) company so that you can
hang your hat with her. Let her know that you will happily help her with
achieving that but until she has achieved it, you cannot be officially
affiliated with her company.
Have you seen 'thank you for smoking'? If you haven't, do. The argument
has been reframed in terms of choice. My answer to that is, Mothers are
entitled to impartial information about what to feed their babies. The WHO,
the AAP and other consensus bodies are the best source of that information.
You might even offer to research the marketing claims of the various IFMCs
and create a handout for mothers who are seeking information about which
product to use. (The conclusion the consensus medical research body has
reached here is that mothers should use the cheapest product because there
is no evidence of benefit from any of the so-called improvements.)

Best of luck
Nina
