Did no one else notice this: "Promote breastfeeding at an individual and
community level as the *optimal* way of nurturing a child ..."????? Where is
Diane? Surely if the AAP can describe breastfeeding as the normal way to
nourish infants, ILCA should be up to speed.
I'll say it again, "Breastfeeding is normal"
There seems to be no reference to protecting breastfeeding through upholding
the International Code and subsequent resolution ... And only one poster has
commented on this on the discussion. Surely members want to be able to say
to their employers, 'I can't hand out formula samples. Doing so is outside
my SoP.'or 'Sorry. Much a I would like to attend your posh luncheon, my
professional body frowns on fraternisation with those whose commercial
interest is to undermine breastfeeding.'
And I am concerned about point "7) Develop a plan of action tailored to the
specific needs of the mother and child." This seems very paternalistic to
me. I would think of myself as supporting the mother to develop a plan of
action that is achievable and will meet her child's needs and her own. But I
am not an IBCLC. How do IBCLCs understand their role?
