I've read this discussion with interest as I recently attended a training session on fetal alcohol syndrome in which all public defender attorneys and investigators in my state, who work w/ juveniles (criminal) & children (child welfare), had to attend. The presenter made the sweeping statement that mothers should *never* ingest alcohol and breastfeed. I was a bit upset to say the least, but was not in the mood to challenge her, esp. since I had nothing to cite at that moment. Even now, I'm not sure what I would say, although I totally agree with Nikki Lee's assessment of the issue. I did drink moderately with my second child (maybe a beer or two a week) and never pumped/dumped. We still laugh about the time I was nursing him as an older toddler and he got up and grabbed my glass and took a sip.
