Just getting back to reading Lactnet. There really is nothing like
an LLLI conference.
It helps remind you that you are part of something much bigger than
the corner of
your little world. You KNOW once again how important the work you do
is on a global
level. Sometimes it makes me feel sad that we still have so far to
go compared to
many other countries and also why some women seem to know this
"secret" about how
important breastfeeding is on SOOO many levels and some still have
not been able to
receive that message. So much important work to do!

As for the children at the conference....that's where you really know
how much breastfeeding
makes a difference. As an example, my 20 yo daughter has been coming
with me to the last 4 conferences.
She babysits during sessions, gets to make a little $ along the way
and helps moms
be able to attend sessions without being so distracted by a little
one. I take her to immerse her
in LLL culture, LOL. So she remembers when she has baby's a special
community.
Her comments this time were somewhat revealing as she babysat for a 8
yo boy: "OMG, mom he is sooo smart". They stayed in the hotel
room...the TV did not go on (boys choice), they played games they
made up...IMAGINE, and she took note of how amazing his vocabulary is
already (she had to ask him what something meant ;-) ).
The little 21mo girl she babysat for was also notably advanced she
mentioned. I told her that
is what breastmilk does...you just had the priviledge of noting the
difference via observation and
not through a scientific experiment.
An LLLI conference certainly is a special place to be for everyone.
You can't walk away from it and say
breastfeeding doesn't make a difference.
