Heather, I distinctly remember Jack Newman saying that spit-up is a "laundry
issue only." Obviously he was NOT referring to the amount that would be
associated with Pyloric Stenosis. But it is appropriate in the USA; moms
really do think there is a huge amount when it seems to be only "normal baby
spit-up."
I had four out of five children who were spitters, definitely the "laundry
spitters" who were never bothered by spitting up, gained great amounts of
weight and were generally happy, healthy babies. Would my children be diagnosed
today as having reflux and needing medication? Probably. Interestingly, the
one who never relinquished a drop of her milk was my twin daughter; she had
eczema and showed some symptoms of allergy to something which went away during
infancy.

When I educate mothers about spitting up, I tell them the difference between
this probably "normal" spitting up behavior and the medically significant
projectile vomiting that is the hallmark of pyloric stenosis.
