I have been known to explain it like this. You have a tight bungee cord attached under your arm and you have to stretch it every time you lift your arm. You can hold it up for a little while but your arm becomes tired and the cord pulls your arm down to the side again. You can try over and over but it always pulls it back down. And eventually it will make that arm muscle sore to lift it up.

Hello all: I am looking for an analogy to help illustrate why breastfeeding with
a tight frenulum can be fatiguing for some babies. I should be able to come up
with something, but my mind is coming up blank (not enough caffeine yet!) I
seem to recall reading a physical analogy once before on Lactnet, but can't
find it in the archives. Can anyone come up with something that will explain it
well to parents? "Breastfeeding with a tongue-tie is like........." thanks in
advance, Doreen Vanderstoep RN, IBCLC
