Interesting post, Janice, and your colleague's views should of course 
be taken seriously.

I am still sceptical, though. For instance, (non-follow on) formula 
in the UK does not contain any added iron - I don't think it is 
permitted (but without checking I could not be sure).

My point is that this shows there is no consensus about what is a 
'must have' in commercial infant formula.
