Pam,
I agree that we really don't know what's biologically "normal" for human 
babies, since culture is such a powerful shaper of parenting behavior. I 
suspect if mom breastfeeds when baby cues, then they will find their own 
pattern based on mom's milk storage capacity, baby's appetite, and 
baby's comfort level with smaller or larger feedings. I think that human 
beings are pretty adaptable, and that we LCs only need to get involved 
when a situation exceeds the limits of adaptability. In those cases, 
it's helpful to have some research so we can counsel mothers wisely.
