Pam's post pushed a button for me. I agree with her. We need to find
a middle ground that allows for babies to be fed. I see mothers with
little to no milk (Don't we all).. In the past 10 years, I have had some
babies who were not being fed because mothers were so afraid of using
formula. They thought that they were doing the right thing for their babies.
Some babies lost a lot of weight, were crying constantly or had just about
given up trying. Some milk issues can be resolved with work but what about
the baby while we are working on it. Feed the baby, fix the problem and get
the baby breastfeeding. There are some women who do everything and will never
have a full supply. We don't have local milk banks on every corner. Formula
has to be the next best thing. And as Pam states "beats the heck out of
starvation".Looking at formula as a medical intervention has worked well for
me when working with some of these difficult situations. I have had a small
handful of mothers who even when presented with very poor weight gain and an
obviously hungry, poorly wetting and not stooling baby are hesitant to
supplement with formula. They have been led to believe that formula is
absolutly poison. The frustrating part of all this is that these babies do
not go on to breasfeed well anyway. Give me a well caloried baby first and
then do whatever can be done to improve the supply and you will get a
breastfeeding baby (even if some formula is part of the picture). Thanks Pam
for your passionate words. Ann Anderson RN,IBCLC
