Apparently, babies are still being fed these home-made formulas in some 
communities. When I did a presentation on breastfeeding in Atlantic Canada a 
couple of years ago, I was approached afterwards by some of the nurses who 
wanted my thoughts on this problem. They told me that some mothers come to 
the hospital and bring the ingredients for these formulas with them, and do 
not want to have their babies fed the commercial formulas. (And do not want 
to breastfeed.) Some hospital staff feel they might as well go along with 
this, others feel that they should insist on the baby having commercial 
formula at least during the hospital stay. I don't know how common this is, 
but clearly it was happening enough that it was an issue. And I wonder if 
there are more mothers using the home-made formulas who simply don't mention 
it during the hospital stay.
