What do you tell parents who ask about what kind of plastic bottles or bags they should use? Do you ever suggest glass? Do you ever think about the fact that plastic is FOREVER? (It never decomposes, tho it does degrade, leaching chemicals into whatever liquid or solid is in it) What about Medela's kit for sterilizing by microwave? Superheating degrades (read incr leaching) plastics. Most recommendations are that you microwave in glass only.
Should we be giving out information? And where should we get this info?
This is another reason for staying home with baby and direct nursing for as long as possible!
On a similar issue: We are having a researcher present some information from PhD thesis at UNH on the presence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) a flame retardant used in carpets, furniture, car interiors, etc etc. One of the easy ways to measure these is using pumped breast milk. Our NHBF Task Force help guide her research design, and are very interested in her results.
