Dear Melissa, I hate to see you so upset but just a thought, babies need
to get a good start and in the hospitals there is so much difficulty
getting that done. Being a hospital LC I can help get a mother-baby
through this difficult time and being an RN helps me deal with the
doctors. Lois

Subject: Medicine engulfing breastfeeding
The thought of the medical field taking ownership of
breastfeeding...well, it
honestly scares me. I can see where there exists, obviously, a
symbiotic relationship between the two; but breastfeeding on a
day-to-day
basis is not something that requires any sort of advanced medical
degree. I
see the lactation consultant as someone who has advanced knowledge in
breastfeeding and is able to present that information to a mother at a
time
when she most needs it...it doesn't take phlebotomy to accomplish that.
If
the IBCLC is to become a credential only for those who are trained in
medicine, we will be doing a grave disservice to women, taking away from
them yet another aspect of control of their own bodies.
I struggle with this...my feeling is so strong that I can't even
coherently
put words to the thoughts and emotions that I have.
