Hauck, Chicago Infant Mortality Study:Peidatrics 2003: ... decreased
risk... as was breastfeeding either ever (OR: 0.2) or currently (OR: 0.2).
That's 5 times the risk for not breastfeeding.

That's likely where your "5 times" came from. Other studies, although
similar in size, do not bring as high a difference although the findings
are still quite significant:

Mitchell,"Risk Factors for SIDS Following the Prevention Campaign in
New Zealand:Pediatrics 1997: There was a 31% increased risk of SIDS
for NOT breastfeeding (after considering modifiable risk factors. Raw
figure was 67% increased risk.)

McGarvey,"An Eight-Year Study of Risk Factors for SIDS: Bed-Sharing vs.
Non Bed-Sharing" Arch of DisChild(Ireland)2005: Breastfeeding bed-
sharing infants had half the risk of SIDS of non breastfeeding bed-
sharers. (and that's double risk for not bf)

Vennemann,"Do risk factors differ between explained sudden
unexpected death in infancy and sudden infant death syndrome?"Arch
Dis Child. 2007: Not being breast fed in the first 2 weeks of life is a risk
factor for SIDS (adjusted OR 2.37).

Vennemann,"Modifiable risk factors for SIDS in Germany: results of
GeSID.VActa Paediatr." 2005: breastfeeding for less than 2 wk
(aOR=1.71)

You can find 5 more refs with numbers from double risk to 7.7 times
risk inside my formula-infant death article here:
