Yesterday worked with a mom who had been taking her 7 week old child to
a chiropractor (which I am in favor of, sometimes). This mother said
the chiro "tested" her child for allergies, told her the baby was
allergic to breast milk and calcium! He did some type of acupressure,
and she thought baby was all better. Baby was NOT all better, had a
posterior frenulum (which we clipped), had a deep channel palate, could
not latch, arching terribly at breast. We used 20 mm shield, contained
flexion with neck and head support and baby was able to latch. This is
a motivated mom so feel she will work through these issues, but it
floors me to think that mothers are being told by "alternative" health
care providers that babies can be allergic to calcium! The mother was a
little skeptical since she is a direct entry midwife.
