Hi, All: Hope everyone had a Blessed Easter and Passover this last week!
Wet nursing and milk sharing are a LOT more common than any of us are
aware. Within the population I serve (primarily white, married, upper-middle
and upper class women where the breastfeeding initiation is a whopping 93%)
I am aware of a large "underground". My moms are smart - they don't talk
about it because they don't want to have to deal with the criticism. They do
talk to me about it, though, and some even use Baby Bistro - the support
group here at the hospital, to tap into the abundance of moms' milk for any
additional milk needs they may have. Many of the moms who meet in the
group use each other for babysitting and some are comfortable with foregoing
bottles of EBM and just nursing each others' babies.
I do not have a problem with this behavior, as long it is consensual and moms
are comfortable with the practice and aware of all the issues.
