Dear Friends:
Breastfeeding is environmentally sustainable in a variety of ways.
It consumes no resources beyond what a mother needs to live.
There are no energy or materials costs; no transportation, manufacture,
packaging, or trash.
As breastfeeding postpones menstruation, there are reduced no costs of
sanitary materials. That might seem trivial to some, but when one considers that
4 million babies are born every year in the US, that is a lot of sanitary
materials!
Another savings comes from the reduced costs of sickness, for mother and
for baby.
Sandra Huffman published on this in the 1980s.
Breastfeeding is as environmentally friendly as a human activity can be.
warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI
