Many moms I see are from Mexico - and they DO use the bottle nipples on
their nipples if they find their babies have trouble breastfeeding - at
times I have had to "wean" the babies from them by going to a regular nipple
shield then to mom's breast. (Got a VERY ANGRY call from a nurse demanding
why I had used a nipple shield with a mom - she didn't speak Spanish and had
not realized that before I had been there, mom had been using a bottle
nipple - again let's remember that the mom we see today is NOT the mom the
last LC saw 2 - 3 days ago!)
Despite my fears of low milk production, these moms did not have babies who
were losing weight - they were getting milk through the bottle nipple!
Perhaps these were moms who would have had a good milk supply no matter what
- or we fixed it prior to being compromised by ineffective milk removal.
I do NOT recommend the use of bottle nipples (or unnecessary nipple shields)
- but we should know what's "out there" so if we find it, we won't be
critical of the mom - but rather ready to help her!
