I'm sorry to hear about that Debra. What a frustrating position to be in.
Some time ago I posted about the crib cards I designed for our bassinetts.
Basically, it expained the s/sx of early hunger cues, crying being the last. At
the bottom i put remember I am learning to breastfeed and pacifiers can slow
done my success. We let the parents check a box inside as to their
preference of exclusive bf, supplement, pacifier use yes or no. Staff were
written up if they did not adhere to the parents wishes unless if was medically
indicated. Really it is viewed as a violation to give something to babies
without parental consent. these cards have served us well and even went on
to the Calif dept of public health as something other hospitals could use.
Jeanette Panchula works for this dept. I have not looked thru the contents to
see if they are being used or not. I know how hard you try and how many
lumps you must have on your head. But your passion and vision is working.
One baby at a time. Change takes time. Very slowly at times. If you can
show the nursing staff how breastfeeding will make their job easier you can
win them over that way. If your manager is not on board it makes it harder
but not impossible. Keep your breastfeeding updates brief, nurses don't have
much time to read stuff. Use color paper to catch their attention. I used the
ILCA's inside track in JHL and would post that if it was relevant to the hospital.
I wish you luck and success. Keep fighting the good fight. Know you are
making a difference!
