Dear Friends:
Our esteemed Lisa Marasco asks about prenatal expression of newborn milk.
Women used to be advised to do this to "get ready" for breastfeeding. I was
advised to do this in 1975; as it didn't make any sense to me intuitively, I
didn't bother.
The concern about preterm labor has never been substantiated in any good
study of which I am aware. Anybody else know of any studies?
My understanding is that receptors in the uterus generally don't respond to
oxytocin until around the time when it would be safe for the baby to be
born: after 36 weeks. Some women will labor spontaneously around then; I believe
that it is genetically linked. Women with African heritage have a tendency to
this.
If she can have an orgasm, she can express milk or breastfeed or whatever!
warmly,
