Here's an email I received from a mother I have been supporting. Her
question is beyond my expertise. If anyone has some answers or suggestions
for her, please let me know.

My surgery is scheduled for Oct 24 and the surgeon wants to do an incision
that goes up to 1/3 of the way around my areola to expose the tissue
underneath then go into the area that needs to be removed. He states that
the ducts around the areola would not be cut. Is it safe to nurse after
such an incision and if so, do I need to wait awhile for it to heal? There
is no guarantee other ducts may not be cut in an attempt to remove the
cancer, but at least not the ones around the areola. So another question
would be if a duct or more are incidentally cut is it safe to nurse or would
it impede healing?
