A little while ago, I had a long email relationship with a mother of
(then) 11 children who never breastfed, but who, deep in her heart,
wanted to with the next baby ...but this only came out after quite a
lengthy correspondence. She was quite vocal about the difficulties
she saw other women going through when they breastfed, and I
explained in a number of emails how these might be avoided. She kept
up the correspondence, asking questions, adding 'yes, buts....' and
'what ifs.....' ad infinitum :)
Then she told me that her husband did not want her to breastfeed,
because he saw it (and I remember the phrase clearly) as
'contraception by the back door' ie a 'secret' even 'sneaky' way to
limit the number of children they had.
They were a fundamentalist family and believed contraception was
against their religious laws....and that included Nature's (or God's)
very own beautiful, elegant and delightfully pleasurable method.
Isn't that sad?
I lost touch with her but I often think about her.
