Within my time as an LLL Leader (7 years), I know of a situation in
which a small local newspaper edited an LLL meeting notice to
eliminate the word "breast". The newspaper listed LLL as a
"parenting" resource and support group. Needless to say the Leader
was not interested nor prepared to be a resource for general
parenting information!
I was surprised at this example of 1950's thinking in the new
millennium. I'm sure this is exactly what the early LLL faced -- a
thousand-fold.
The LLLI Founders have said that in the time & place (1950s Illinois
USA) LLL began, Spanish sounded sophisticated and genteel. "La Leche
League" could be printed in a family newspaper, AND it had cachet.
