Hugh's Lullaby
Hush-a-bye baby, thy cradle is green
Papa's a nobleman, Mama's a queen
Betty's a Lady, she wears a gold ring
Johnnie's a drummer, he drums for the king
Rock-a-bye baby, on the tree top
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock
When the bough bends, the cradle will fall
Down will come baby, bough, cradle and all
Suckle my baby, take of thy fill
Mama's sweet milk, will guard against ill
All that you need, I gift it to thee
Nothing can part us, my baby and me
Settle my baby, here at my breast
We'll lie here together, and take of our rest,
I'll love you and hold you, keep you from harm
We'll snuggle together, safe in your Dad's arms
Sleep-a-bye baby, night it is here
Warm in our bed, there's nothing to fear
Our hearts beat together, our breath draws as one
We'll dream of each other, until morning comes
(Do note that this has an extra beat to the more modern version of the
original - it's best exampled by "baby, bough, cradle and all" as
opposed to "baby , cradle and all. Slower, slightly more exaggerated
cadence brings in the extra beat. Clearly, first two verses are the
original, last three are mine - anyone may use but I retain copyright.)
