Your anecdote shows so clearly how an individual interacts with its
environment. Why did she make the informed choice to 50/50-feed,
although it might cause more problems than 100 % breast or 100 %
bottle? Imagine this woman lived in Sweden, where 80 % breastfeed
exclusively at 2 months. Here it is not "main stream" to bottle feed
infants at that age - rather, women report feeling stigmatized when
not breastfeeding babies less than 4 months exclusively. Imagine she
lived in a hunter/gatherer community? We - I - don't know anything
about why she chose as she did. But if we agree that 6 months of
exclusively breastfeeding, the society might very well have falied her.
