hi katherine

>now that my population is more mainstream, the reality is that they
>won't be breastfeeding if they have to do it frequently around the
>clock.

i see what you mean... but it is always worth trying.
when i think about what were my ideas about babies and breastfeeding before
having my first baby, i blush!!! the first thing i bought for him were a couple of
pacifiers! i thought that breastfeeding for 2 years was crazy, 2 years, tch!, i
thought co-sleeping was harmful because it created bad habits.
i was lucky i found people who challanged me. and i was "souple" enough to
give it a try and follow my instinct. so, i ended up doing a lot of things i never
thought i would.
when you have a mainstream mother in front of you, maybe she is just
confused by all the contrary advice she gets, by the mainstream ideas about
educating and creating an autonomous baby (a bit of an obsession in our
society). maybe she is not very empowered because she delivered in hospitals
where you really get de-personalized, where everybody choses for you and
tells you what to do making you feel very incompetent... sometimes i think the
best lactation consultants must be psychologists!

sorry for the long answer, i thought this might be relevant, but maybe i am
not objective enough...
