> Libby and Naomi,
If you look at this link, you can see that lactation is a topic at
the conference.
http://www.breast2007.com/topics/default.asp
Here is the actual section in which it is listed:
BREAST PHYSIOLOGY AND FUNCTION
Steroid and growth hormone receptors in breast cells
Gender differences in the breast
Breast development and abnormalities
Hormonal control of breast function
Pregnancy-associated changes in breast cells
Lactation and breast-feeding: effects on the breast
Breast cell biology after the menopause
Drugs and breast function
Now, since this is supposed to be a congress on "the breast", what is
far more disturbing to me are:
---Out of almost 80 sub-topics, only one mentions breastfeeding
(interestingly it mentions lactation and breast-feeding (sic) as two
separate concepts.
---The emphasis is clearly on pathology, not in any remote way on
wellness
--The entire approach is drug and surgery-based--no holism
whatsoever, except for one minor mention of "lifestyle" treatment of
breast cancer--what about lifestyle prevention of breast cancer!!!
--I am guessing there is no evaluation of the impact of nutrition and
deficiencies such as iodine on health vs disease
--"The breast" is treated as an object distinct and separate from the
woman -- one sub-topic is entitled "the breast unit"!!!
--there is no topic that suggests any discussion of sexuality
--the whole presentation looks like one more way for a surgical
profession to take control of a normal body component and its normal
function and make it pathological
--from reading this, my sense would be that the role of the breast it
to have cancer
If I were to try to influence this congress, it would be to humanize
it, culturalize and socialize it. I would want to see speakers like
Christiane Northrup and Susun Weed and info on keeping well, such as
this:
