One thought might be to start with a bit of supplementation and finis
hthe feed at the breast. This way mother gets some validation about her
breastfeeding - as opposed to having to give a bottle after BFing b/c
she failed at getting a good feed at the breast. Also if baby's initial
hunger has been satiated with just a bit of EBM or ABM, then he might be
more motivated to work at latching onto the breast and staying latched
on for a longer feed. YOu didn't say the age of the baby but I'm
assuming we are talking just a week or two so given the small stomach
capacity, we're talking 1/2 oz of supplementation or just a wee bit more
-- jsut enough to take the edge of the hunger. IF baby is really hungry
and frantic, the supplementing prior to working on the BFing can help to
alleviate the intense need to be feed NOW and allow mother to be more
relaxed about working with baby at the breast knowing she's had a little
something and isn't starving... kind of takes the pressure of mother.
That's the only thought that pops into my mind at bedtime here!
HTH.
