Hello--
I have been reading Lactnet for almost a year now, every day. I am a mom
to two girls, my youngest being 7 1/2 months old. I am not a lactation
professional. I have gained so much knowledge about breastfeeding by reading this
list, and was really motivated to exclusively breast feed my daughter even when
it got tough! Thank you so much!!!!
My question right now is regards to birth control pills (EstroStep) and
supply. At my 6 week postpartum my provider prescribed me EstroStep and told me
that the majority of women do not have supply problems, but some do. I had
good supply and quickly (with in 2 weeks) it was diminishing with the pills. So
I stopped. I started back on them when my daughter was 5 months old because
that is when my period returned. So I have been on them for 2 months.
Everything has been going great, with the baby getting the majority of her feeding
from the breast with just a little bit of homemade baby food introduced. I
breast feed her first and then will offer her some solid foods. The past two
weeks though she has not been satisfied at the breast. She is clearly hungry
after nursing on both sides. She normally would only eat a couple spoonfuls of
solids after nursing, now she will eat a 4 oz jar. She wants to breast feed
more, and I let her (i work from home). But she gets frustrated. There dosnt
seem to be near as much milk production as before, maybe she is just emptying
the breast more often so it is just received lower production? Could she be
going through a growth spurt? Could my milk supply be diminishing from the
birth control pills? I am very worried about loosing my milk supply, could that
happen from birth control pills-- even if baby is nursing often? We
co-sleep, and she eats at least 3 times during the night on both sides. I am
prepared to rent a hospital pump again if I need to-- power pumping is what helped
my supply after I quit the pills the first time (I saw my pedi's in house
IBCLC).
I breast fed my first daughter (now 4) till she was 8.5 months. I have no
idea why I stopped so early with her, I was 23 at the time and was so proud of
myself for lasting "that long". I cant imagine stopping now with my second
daughter and want this breast feeding relationship we have to last a long time.
So I am quite worried right now, hoping that as I type im not drying up! :)
Thanks for any advise, help, tips, suggestions!
