I just looked up this information for myself recently.  Kellymom has some great stuff.  Basically, you need to eat at least 1500-1800 calories per day and not lose more than 1.5 lbs per week.  Some moms need to eat a little more, but you can stay in that range without affecting milk supply.  Kellymom addresses the study regarding toxins released while dieting, and it seems that the caloric intake has to be well below 1500 calories a day for this to occur.
