Hi All,
While I am supposed to be getting ready for a much needed weekend out of
town at the ocean - where am I?? Here on Lactnet! LOL!
Some thoughts on some of the recent posts: The Ped who advised no
breastfeeding for a newborn with Jaundice and the mother's subsequent
engorgement: What is his/her reasoning for this? Now both mother and baby
are in danger. Baby for (most likely) being supplemented with ABM and who
will possibly lose mother's milk due to lack of milk removal for mom and
engorgement that may lead to milk supply failure (or issues). Sounds to me
like this person needs some serious reeducation.
Re: Mother with baby #10 and babies who are losing weight. This is not a
milk supply or quality issue. This is a baby issue/latching issue. Whether
it is poor latching, poor milk transfer, nipples very elastic now, or baby
having some physical issue (how common would that be with 3 babies???) it
still has nothing to do with the quality of the milk. It always gets me
that breastmilk is blamed.OK - honestly - it really makes me mad.
Dr's who need to now give orders so baby can be fed at mother's breast????
Give me a break! OK - fine to have to give orders for Vit K and eye
ointment - but for the breast? Yikes! T'was mentioned that the mother has
the say so and how could she let the people SHE is paying tell her what to
do and keep her from her baby. Unfortunately, it happens all the time. How
often do I remind my clients that THEY have the RIGHT to push for treatment
for both them and their babies? My client with the high thyroid - after
doing some serious research together we both realize that she is in a bad
situation. It is necessary for her to push the Thyroid level issue with her
HCP and she has tried - but they are not interested. It isn't outside the
'range' of normal so they don't care - even tho she is having SYMPTOMS!
Even tho the range of normal varies depending on what lab you go to
apparently - from .5 - 5.0 or .4 -4.0 - her levels? .36. The lab she went
to? Their range is .34 - 4.0. She will be finding an endocrinologist this
week.
In our society I am finding myself more and more frustrated and sometimes
downright angry. Women who feel the need to be responsible for everyone
else's feelings about NIP - when will that end? People who forget they are
paying the Dr for care and don't demand appropriate care NOW because they
don't remember that they have that right; Babies coming out of hospitals
damaged by deliveries that were interfered with WAY more than they needed to
be (if at all); I get flack here regularly from other HCP's nurses, etc,
who don't understand why I refer these damaged babies (whose heads are
dramatically lopsided, cranial overlaps that make them look like the
Frankenstein baby, torticollis issues, broken collarbones that are MISSED!,
obvious tongue ties, suck/swallow issues, severe snoring.the list goes on
and on!) - and they tell the parents "It will all fix itself - just
supplement with a bottle and ABM if you can't sustain the milk supply or it
hurts too much to BF". Women who come out of the hospital damaged by a
myriad of hospital interventions that caused more problems than they helped
- who cares for them once they get home? It all has this Capricorn banging
her head against the wall over and over and over.any wonder why I need a day
or 2 at the ocean?
Someday, maybe, our society will figure it out. BF rates are going up and
down all over - hospitals have good days and bad days - hopefully one day
the BF rates will be stably HIGH and the hospitals will all have good days.
Someday all hospitals will be baby friendly and ABM supplementation will be
a distant memory. Someday maybe, the USA government will get off its butt
and stop letting the big business be in charge and make them tow the line
and follow the rules. (I know - dream on.)
I hope everyone has a great weekend. I am leaving this behind - I just felt
a need to vent a bit.glad I can do it here.
Take care all.maybe if we all put out to the Universe (or whoever your deity
is) that we need a little help down here and are specific about what this
society (worldwide) needs it will happen.who knows? It sure as heck can't
hurt.
Jaye
