One of the most effective tools I've observed to teach about "normal" infant
feeding to hospital staff is the section that Carol Melcher has in her Birth and
Beyond training.
She distributes a page with 8 (I think) charts that demonstrate the sleep-
wake behavior of 8 different babies in a the first 10 hour period postpartum -
this was actually from a study that was not about breastfeeding, and includes
babies that are born with little meds and babies that were born with more.
Anyway, she has the audience divide into groups and has them "feed" each
baby starting at 2, 3, and 4 hours postpartum then continue that same hour
interval - but ONLY when the baby is awake according to the chart - even
with a "2 hour schedule" those babies are fed less than 2 times in 10 hours!
THEN she has them "feed the baby" at 30 minutes after deliver and any time,
30 minutes apart, that the baby is awake. BIG difference.
Then the question comes: How are you going to feed a baby in 30 minute
intervals if they're not RIGHT THERE WITH MOM???
Makes sense!
