There's been a lot of research in this area in
the last few years. Search terms include
epigenetics, developmental (or fetal) origins of
adult disease, and the Barker hypothesis
(especially with regard to coronary disease and
diabetes), and work is being conducted in fields
ranging from nutrition to toxicology. It's just incredible.
