Yet another baby-led latching success! This one was uncomplicated and more
or less expected, as the baby was <1 hour old and alert for his first feed. It
was nevertheless very moving to witness! Baby and mom were both
comfortable and relaxed, baby never cried or became frustrated, and got one
of the most beautiful latches I've ever seen from a newborn. And all by
himself!
I am confused, however, about where to place the baby on mom. Dr. Smillie's
approach recommends placing baby between mother's breasts; so does the
Australian Breastfeeding Assoc. But to do the breast crawl, baby must be on
mom's abdomen. I've always been told that this specific placement is very
important, as baby can move forward but not backward. Is this meant to be
the placement only for the first latch, immediately after delivery? When
placing baby on mom's chest between her breasts, should baby's mouth be
above or below the level of the nipples, or does it matter?
Kindly,
Julie Conaway, RN
Breastfeeding counsellor
